Why Cats Make Great Companions

Why Cats Make Great Companions

Cats have a bit of a reputation. When people think of cats, they tend to picture an aloof pet, maybe even indifferent to its owner. However, this is not always the case; cats can be excellent companions to people they love. Though felines naturally won’t always be as social as dogs, it is proven that cats enjoy human companionship. Oftentimes, they show it in other ways such as hanging out in the same room as you as opposed to being more openly affectionate.

What are the benefits of owning a cat?

If you are a person that prefers to be indoors, or someone that lives in an apartment, a cat may be a great option for you. If space is an issue, cats tend to take up less space and are smaller than a majority of dogs.

Cats are independent. While dogs can be very clingy, cats are more prone to needing their own space. If you want an animal that takes time to itself, a cat will surely be the way to go. Most likely, your cat will spend roughly 16 hours a day asleep.

Cats are lower maintenance. This isn’t to say you don’t have to provide for your cat, but they can be easier to take care of than dogs. Cats spend most of their time sleeping, and indoor cats do not need outdoor time. All your cat needs are food, water, a litter box, toys, and your companionship to be happy. Though you can walk a cat, cats do not need to be walked.

Cats are playful. Most cats will go crazy once they get their paws on a toy they like. Many cats will react to laser pointers, feather toys, and even fake mice. Watching your normally composed feline go bonkers for a toy is one of the best parts of cat ownership. It’s also a great way for cats and owners to bond. Kittens and adult cats love playtime.

On top of the other perks of cat ownership, there are health benefits to be had. Owning a pet can reduce stress and even improve your heart health. Pet ownership can be therapeutic and reduce stress, and can also prevent loneliness.

How do cats show affection?

There are many things that cats will do to show affection to their beloved humans. Purring is a pretty good indicator that your feline friend is happy. Happy cats will also knead. Kneading is a behavior that cats learned as kittens that adult cats continue to do when happy and relaxed. Something unique to cat affection is the “slow blink.” A cat slowly blinking at its owner is the feline equivalent of “I love you” or even a kitty kiss. Your cat may also give you a headbutt or rub its head on you. Cats will do this to leave their scent on you and mark their territory, showing that they consider you their person. When a cat sleeps near you or on you, it is a compliment. They are allowing themselves to be vulnerable near you and consider you a safe space. Of course, not every cat is the same and every cat will show affection in its own special way.

How do I care for a cat?

Though caring for a cat is simple, there are some important things to keep in mind when preparing for your new feline friend. The major thing that separates cats from dogs are their need for a litter box. Cats need to have a designated spot to go to the bathroom in. Along with a litter box, you will also need litter. Cats can have different preferences when it comes to their little, so don’t be afraid to experiment with it to see what your pet likes.

You will also need to make sure that you get your cat a nutritious diet. As cats are carnivorous, they will need high-protein and taurine in their food. It is good to have both wet and dry food for cats. Since many cats aren’t crazy about standing water, wet food is a good way for them to stay hydrated. This is important because felines are more likely to develop kidney and bladder issues than dogs are.

One thing to keep in mind about providing your cat with wet food is that all cats will have different preferences when it comes to flavors and textures. Some cats will like pate while others may gravitate towards chunks or shreds. Some love gravy and others don’t. Some cats hate seafood— others hate poultry. It is possible you will have to try different things to figure out what your cat likes. There are even cats who don’t take to any wet food whatsoever.

If you do end up with a cat that hates wet food, don’t fret. There are other ways to make sure your furbaby is getting the water that it needs. Since cats don’t care for standing water, you can try a water fountain. This should stimulate your cat into drinking water. Some cats may even play with the fountain.

To sum it up, cat ownership can be a fulfilling and rewarding experience. Though first-time cat owners may find it intimidating, once you establish a bond with your feline you will find that it is all worth it.
